We surveyed James Islanders, Family Feud style, to identify the top reasons why they choose to live there. Survey says:

  1. Privacy. Well-established neighborhoods equate to homes with spacious lots, mature vegetation, and thoughtfully planned communities

  2. Trees! James Island cultivates the distinct feeling that you’re living in a forest, more so than any other place in Charleston. Conifers of every make and model line the roads; even the commercial routes seem softer, hiding superstores like WalMart and Lowes behind highly wooded barriers.

  3. Price point. The cost of living on James Island remains, on average, lower than either Mt. Pleasant or downtown Charleston, making finding a home and resourcing goods a less costly.

  4. Entertainment. Jam out to a funky band at the Pour House, sip wine while catching the latest blockbuster at the Terrace Theater, or catch an off-off Broadway show at the Charleston Performing Arts Center. There’s no lack of entertainment here.

  5. The vibe. James Island boasts a welcoming feel to people from all walks of life. Pawn shops coexist peaceably beside churches; hole-in-the-wall taco joints compete with fine dining Italian restaurants; and everyone enjoys use of public spaces such as James Island County Park.

With good public schools, room to sprawl out, water access, and a smattering of new apartment complexes, James Island can’t be overlooked as an ideal place to enjoy lowcountry living.
